Kameh Artisan Bakery: Local Bread, Craft, and Puerto Rican Entrepreneurship

Kameh Artisan Bakery: One of Puerto Rico's Best Sourdough Bakeries

Kameh Artisan Bakery is part of our Puerto Rico Local Spotlight series, where we feature entrepreneurs, artists, makers, and businesses making a positive impact across Puerto Rico. Whether they're clients or simply brands I admire, every story shares one thing in common: people doing exceptional work that deserves to be discovered.

Some local businesses earn your attention because they're popular. Others earn your trust because you become a customer yourself.

For me, Kameh Artisan Bakery falls into that second category.

I've been buying bread from Nizar and his family for quite some time, and it has become part of our weekly routine. Before recommending any local business, I want to experience it personally. That's exactly why I sat down with Nizar—to learn the story behind one of my favorite artisan bakeries in Puerto Rico and share it with others.

This article accompanies our YouTube interview and is another chapter in our growing collection of Puerto Rico Local Spotlight stories.

Meet Kameh Artisan Bakery

Located in Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico, Kameh Artisan Bakery specializes in naturally fermented sourdough breads and handcrafted baked goods made using traditional baking techniques.

Founded by Nizar and his wife Dina, the bakery has built its reputation around quality, consistency, and patience. Rather than chasing speed, they focus on creating bread the traditional way—allowing fermentation and craftsmanship to do the work.

It's this philosophy that makes Kameh stand out among artisan bakeries in Puerto Rico.

What Makes This Puerto Rico Sourdough Bakery Different?

During our conversation, Nizar explained that sourdough isn't a trend—it's one of the oldest methods of bread making. Instead of relying on commercial shortcuts, naturally fermented dough develops flavor and texture through time.

Simple Ingredients

For first-time customers, Nizar recommends starting with the plain sourdough. Made with flour, water, salt, and naturally fermented starter, it showcases exactly what traditional sourdough is meant to taste like.

Natural Fermentation

Many of Kameh's breads ferment for at least 24 hours, while some products—including their focaccia—can ferment for up to 72 hours before baking.

Always Innovating

Beyond classic sourdough, Kameh continues experimenting with rosemary breads, flaxseed loaves, focaccia, baguettes, and even chocolate sourdough, always looking for new ways to surprise customers while staying true to traditional methods.
